Federal Segment Architecture Methodology (FSAM)
Phase One recently participated, on behalf of the Department of the Interior (DOI), in the development of the new Federal Segment Architecture Methodology (FSAM). The Chief Architect from DOI and Phase One client, Ms. Colleen Coggins, chaired the Federal Segment Architecture Working Group (FSAWG) that developed the new methodology. The FSAWG consisted of federal agency chief architects tasked to leverage enterprise architecture (EA) best practices in order to publish a standard methodology for creating and using segment architectures.
FSAM is a step-by-step process for developing and using segment architecture that leverages existing “best practice” analysis techniques and easy-to-use templates to expedite architecture development. FSAM also includes guidance for development of segment architecture in the form of a repeatable “how-to” process for business-driven, results-oriented modernization planning. FSAM is designed to help architects develop the core elements and attributes that are needed for a complete segment architecture, and will be a great tool for all federal agencies.
In a recent news article, Karen Evans, OMB's Administrator of E-Government and Information Technology, stated that the FSAM “is designed to increase the potential for reuse and collaboration on segment architecture among agencies.”

Phase One has helped DOI and other clients use the FSAM by providing FSAM Master and FSAM Certified professionals and by delivering training programs that are practical, understandable, and leave students feeling confident rather than confused.
Phase One partners with the FEAC Institute to provide the FSAM training as part of the Federal Enterprise Architect Certification. Contact Phase One for details on upcoming training classes or to schedule private training sessions.Methodology for Business Transformation (MBT) v1.5
Phase One supported the Department of the Interior (DOI) with the development of their methodology for creating segment architectures, the Methodology for Business Transformation (MBT). The MBT is an innovative, step-by-step guide for creating segment architectures and documenting the findings and recommendations in a road-map for change: a Modernization Blueprint. The MBT is available at http://www.doi.gov/ocio/architecture/mbt. DOI and other Agencies used this step-by-step process for creating segment architectures within their organizations. However, with the release of FSAM, DOI has retired MBT and uses the FSAM to develop segment architectures.
Training: Methodology for Business Transformation (MBT) v1.5
Phase One has helped DOI and other clients use the MBT by providing MBT Master and MBT Certified professionals and by delivering training programs. Since the MBT has been retired, Phase One will no longer be offering MBT training.
